QUEBEC $115.48 In this richly documented work, Serge Courville tells the geographical history of Quebec, from the appearance of the first human groups through to the present day. This detailed and erudite book maps the major stages of Quebec’s collective development, providing a geographical record of the many social relationships that over time created a sense of place. Landscape, Courville shows, is the keeper of memory, the record of successive changes, and a witness to the genesis of the new. Places that were once agricultural, then left to waste and ruin, are today revivified by tourism. Areas that now house office buildings were long ago open playgrounds where children ruled. Drawing on vast research, Courville shows how, in spite of the turbulence Quebec often endures – or perhaps because of it – the land itself may be seen as an important participant in the history of its peoples. Quebec: A Historical Geography was originally published by Les Presses de l’Universite Laval as Le Quebec: Geneses et mutation du territoire. |

Party $12.71 Peter Sellers plays a bumbling foreigner once again (but this time he’s not from France) in this cult-favorite comedy. Hrundi V. Bakshi (Peter Sellers) is an accident-prone actor from India who has come to California, hoping to make a name for himself in Hollywood movies. However, Bakshi quickly makes the wrong impression on producer C.S. Divot (Gavin MacLeod) and studio chief Fred Clutterbuck (J. Edward McKinley) when he accidentally blows up the set for his first film. Clutterbuck jots down Bakshi’s name to remind himself to have the actor blacklisted, but he doesn’t realize that he’s put the name on the guest list for an upcoming party at his home. Bakshi sees the social event as an opportunity to get back in Clutterbuck’s good graces, but from the moment he arrives, one thing after another goes wrong, with increasing effect; it doesn’t help that he finds himself infatuated with Michele Monet (Claudine Longet), Divot’s latest starlet discovery. Director Blake Edwards shot The Party with a minimal script to allow Peter Sellers and the other comic actors greater room for slapstick improvisation, which helps explain why many of the film’s most memorable scenes feature little or no dialogue. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

Ween – Quebec [PA] $10.81 Ween: Dean Ween (vocals, guitar, bass, vocoder); Gene Ween (vocals, bass, keyboards, drum machine).Additional personnel: Andrew Weiss (strings, keyboards, synthesizer, drums); Glen McClelland (piano, keyboards); Dave Dreiwitz (bass); John Freese, Sim Cain (drums).Recorded at the Zion House, Hopewell, New Jersey.Personnel: Gene Ween (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, omnichord, keyboards, synthesizer, drum machine); Dean Ween (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, electric sitar, keyboards, vocoder, drums); Andrew Weiss (strings, keyboards, synthesizer, fretless bass, drums, percussion); Glen McClelland (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards); Josh Freese, Sim Cain (drums).Audio Mixers: Christopher Shaw ; Andrew Weiss.Arrangers: Andrew Weiss; Ween.Three years after the release of WHITE PEPPER, Weeners Dean and Gene are back with their eighth studio album. Starting with the Motorhead-like charge of "It`s Gonna Be a Long Night," it`s immediately apparent that recent years of marriage, parenthood, and touring with jam bands (???) haven`t mellowed the duo. And though their glue-huffing days are presumably behind them, they`re still hitting the prescription drugs with "Zoloft," a spacey pop ode to the calming pills.Rather than crafting weird, mutated songs with pop leanings, Dean and Gene are now largely focused on crafting pop songs with weird, mutated leanings, a subtle yet important distinction that becomes clear on songs such as "Transdermal Celebration," "Tried and True," and "Chocolate Town." Of course, there`s still time for a few distorted ditties with warped vocals such as "So Many People in the Neighborhood" and "Happy Colored Marbles," but even these strange little creatures secretly aspire to some minor pop majesty. Sure to please "Boognish" believers and adventurous listeners alike, QUEBEC will sprinkle your day with sunny and stinky pop tunes that you won`t easily forget. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
