Excerpt: CHAPTER II Birth, Education, Ordination The origin of names is an interesting study, requiring a great deal of patient and diligent research. Dauray in its original form is a name that dates far back into French history. Histories of the origin of the names of families emigrating from France into Quebec after the foundation of that city was laid in 1608, list Dore and Dorat as the forms in which the name originally appeared. It signifies something golden, alluding perhaps, to ornamental costume or wealth in gold. The name in its present form Dauray appears to be a corruption of Dore, probably originating with some British official after the fall of Quebec, who was unacquainted with French nomenclature and wrote the name according to the sound. It might also be a place name from Auray in Brittany, and, if so, the spelling Dauray (d’Auray) would be authentic. Charles Dauray’s ancestors came to Quebec from Brittany in France about 1650, and at that time the name was undoubtedly written Dore. Charles was born in Marieville on March 15, 1838, the fourth son of Charles Casimir Dauray and Marie Louise Messier. Charles Casimir Dauray was twice married. His first wife died at an early age, leaving one son. His second wife was Marie Louise Messier, daughter of prosperous parents living at Varennes, P. Q. At the time of hissecond marriage, Charles Casimir Dauray was a resident of Port Neuf, a suburb of Quebec, and was employed at Chambly, a town located near Varennes.
