Cruise Ship Doctor

Cruise Ship Doctor

$34.48

Cruise Ship Doctor rollicks with the outrageous antics of Oliver Loring, M.D., a Harvard emergency physician, amorous bachelor, and an expert ballroom dancer, who takes a gig in the Caribbean on the grandest, most legendary cruise ship on the high seas, the S/S Nordic Blue. Loring rides the tropical waves with a highly eccentric group of passengers and wacky crew members, while he pursues Ulla von Straf, a melancholy and elusive Austrian ballerina. For this “Valentine TV Cruise,” the Nordic Blue hosts Farrelly Farrell, a popular “reality TV” personality, who televises the cruise around the world and exposes frenetic on-board encounters for the cameras. With the talented but neurotic Loring at the center of the turmoil, a tension-filled climax erupts with stunning effects. Call it “Monty Python” meets “The Love Boat” or “Ship of Fools on Dexedrine,” this hilarious sea adventure offers a rousing behind-the-scenes romp through the Caribbean with farcical confrontations and delightful international characters — all of it laced with a tantalizing soupçon of the metaphysical.

This book is about modern pirates: those who sail huge cruise ships from one port to another, offloading thousands of visitors a day. While the industry rakes in billions of dollars a year, paying virtually no income tax, the ports that ships visit are left with relatively few crumbs. It exploits workers onboard ships, uses graft from its deep war chests to shape political decisions and influence media, and bullies administrations into accepting, for example, that Carnival’s 50 percent-plus market dominance is not anti-competitive, or that its abysmal environmental and health practices are responsible. It represents capitalism at its worst. Cruise Ship Squeeze focuses on the politics and economics of an industry that is continually subsidized by ports and by local, regional, and national governments and which runs roughshod over environmental and other laws and regulations. Through confidential documents and meetings with port officials, corporate executives, politicians, and industry insiders, cruise specialist Klein includes information never previously reported on: Campaign contributions (19972004) Health outbreaks (20022004) Money spent on lobbyists (19972004) Donations from industry-sponsored and -funded foundations (19962004) A detailed and alarming expos of the injustices of cruise tourism, the book’s concluding chapter examines social and political action that has been directed toward the cruise industry, identifies key organizations and groups that have been effective and that have maintained their integrity, and calls on readers to help contain the industry through grassroots activism so that it becomes environmentally, socially, economically, and politically viable. Ross Klein has taken more than 30 cruises in all parts of the world, comprising over 300 days. An associate professor of social work at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he has written widely on the cruise business, and his previous book, Cruise Ship Blues, caused waves in the industry.

But accidents, illnesses and melodrama soon changed the fairy tale . . .

Take This Book On A Cruise Ship

Take This Book On A Cruise Ship

After you?ve played your twenty-seventh game of shuffleboard ? today, and one more lobster dinner is going to force you to grow claw crackers, find a quiet place with a comfortable deck chair. I?ve heard people say that a cruise ship is exciting and boring, riotous and relaxing, and they?ll either never travel any other way again or move to the desert. Nevertheless, everyone seems to agree?the ships are always packed with enough people to make single-file a lifestyle. Here?s a book to take with you when you do locate an unpopulated corner of your floating pool deck. Two dozen ways to escape from anxious deckhands laden with fresh towels, single women and men seeking a night, a cruise, or a bankroll, and those wonderful toddlers who think every solid object is a drum. The stories are grouped together in groups of three with some obvious, well maybe not always obvious, connection. Read them slowly, alone or with a friend, if that?s your reason for taking the ship in the first place. Take your time, though, don?t rush; save a few stories for the lifeboat.
