QUEBEC (Hardcover) $93.74 The discipline of geography has recently spawned a specialty that investigates not only relationships between people and the land, but also how those relationships evolved into what they are. Courville contributes by tracing the broad cycles of Quebec`s development from its origins to the present. Some of the journey parallels that of traditional history, and some breaks new paths. Ike Quebec – Blue and Sentimental $9.83 Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone, piano); Grant Green (guitar); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone, piano); Grant Green (guitar); Sonny Clark (piano); Paul Chambers (bass instrument, upright bass); Sam Jones (upright bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).Although not as well known as other big tenor men like John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, or Benny Golson, Ike Quebec was a major contributor to the classic era of jazz and this 1961 Blue Note date captures him in his prime. BLUE & SENTIMENTAL is indeed one of but a few discs that Quebec recorded for Blue Note, although he was involved with the legendary label as an A&R man and performed on many sessions by other artists. His huge, velvety tone and bluesy swagger are Quebec`s signature as he lopes and swings through several classic tunes like Count Basie`s lazy title track, the bouncing "That Old Black Magic," and Cole Porter`s hauntingly melodic "It`s Alright With Me." Filling out the quartet are no less than Grant Green, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, Blue Note regulars all, who shine brightly as always. Other choice moments on this disc include Quebec and Green`s tight interaction on Quebec`s catchy "Minor Impulse," the smoky ballad "Don`t Take Your Love From Me," and the easy-going closer "Count Every Star." Ike Quebec – Soul Samba [11/1] $25.67 Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Wendell Marshall (bass); Willie Bobo (drums); Garvin Masseaux (chekere).Producer: Alfred Lion.Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on October 5, 1962. Originally released on Blue Note (84114). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note`s Limited Edition Connoisseur series.Though not as well known as giants Ben Webster and Don Byas, the late Ike Quebec was a major stylist whose specialty was the big-toned, cozy, breathy, romantic tenor saxophone. Quebec made a series of soul-jazz sessions for Blue Note, as well as this 1962 rarity on which he had a go at the au courant bossa nova sound. Accompanied by the burnished guitar of Kenny Burrell and the Latin spice of Willie Bobo, Quebec brings his emotive approach to the sly, cool expression that is bossa nova. The contrast is exhilarating, making for a pleasant surprise for fans of the Brazilian style as well as for Quebec fans accustomed to his usual bluesy groove. This 2007 remastered edition includes three alternate takes. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

QUEBEC $115.48 In this richly documented work, Serge Courville tells the geographical history of Quebec, from the appearance of the first human groups through to the present day. This detailed and erudite book maps the major stages of Quebec’s collective development, providing a geographical record of the many social relationships that over time created a sense of place. Landscape, Courville shows, is the keeper of memory, the record of successive changes, and a witness to the genesis of the new. Places that were once agricultural, then left to waste and ruin, are today revivified by tourism. Areas that now house office buildings were long ago open playgrounds where children ruled. Drawing on vast research, Courville shows how, in spite of the turbulence Quebec often endures – or perhaps because of it – the land itself may be seen as an important participant in the history of its peoples. Quebec: A Historical Geography was originally published by Les Presses de l’Universite Laval as Le Quebec: Geneses et mutation du territoire. |

Ween – Quebec [8/10] $11.97 Ween: Dean Ween (vocals, guitar, bass, vocoder); Gene Ween (vocals, bass, keyboards, drum machine).Additional personnel: Andrew Weiss (strings, keyboards, synthesizer, drums); Glen McClelland (piano, keyboards); Dave Dreiwitz (bass); John Freese, Sim Cain (drums).Recorded at the Zion House, Hopewell, New Jersey.Audio Mixer: Andrew Weiss.Recording information: Flood Zone, Holgate, NJ; Graphic Sound Studio, Ringoes, NJ; Lake Henry, PA; Water Music, Hoboken, NJ; Zion House Of Flesh, Hopewell, NJ.Arrangers: Andrew Weiss; Ween.Three years after the release of WHITE PEPPER, Weeners Dean and Gene are back with their eighth studio album. Starting with the Motorhead-like charge of "It`s Gonna Be a Long Night," it`s immediately apparent that recent years of marriage, parenthood, and touring with jam bands (???) haven`t mellowed the duo. And though their glue-huffing days are presumably behind them, they`re still hitting the prescription drugs with "Zoloft," a spacey pop ode to the calming pills.Rather than crafting weird, mutated songs with pop leanings, Dean and Gene are now largely focused on crafting pop songs with weird, mutated leanings, a subtle yet important distinction that becomes clear on songs such as "Transdermal Celebration," "Tried and True," and "Chocolate Town." Of course, there`s still time for a few distorted ditties with warped vocals such as "So Many People in the Neighborhood" and "Happy Colored Marbles," but even these strange little creatures secretly aspire to some minor pop majesty. Sure to please "Boognish" believers and adventurous listeners alike, QUEBEC will sprinkle your day with sunny and stinky pop tunes that you won`t easily forget. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Water, Inc. $3.48 A fast-paced eco-thriller of thwarted water privatization. A private American consortium of corporate owners aims to pipe and ship water from northern Quebec to the US. Congressmen, state governors, and a federal administration hostile to Canada ride shotgun for them, aided by a brilliant, existentially torn Quebec deputy minister and a cut-throat minister of finance. They’re resisted by a whistle-blowing executive, the director of a major US environmental organization, a group of Quebec ecologists, a feisty British journalist, three rogue policemen, a reluctant eco-terrorist, and a maverick Vermont governor hated by the consortium and the White House. In an era during which water scarcity—"one of the major problems of the twenty-first century," according to the UN—becomes a very real proposition for much of the world, Water, Inc. is an exquisitely timed political thriller. With action sprawling across urban and rural America, into the cities and beautiful wilderness of Quebec, and as far as Mexico, Lisbon, London, and Brussels, it is a story of greed, heroism, clashing loyalties, love, hate, and mortal risk. |

Examining Fce and CAE (Paperback) $40.14 This critical history covers 70 years of two major UCLES / Cambridge ESOL international exams: the First Certificate in English (FCE) and the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). The story begins with the development and first sitting of the FCE (then called the Lower Certificate in English) in 1939. The book then traces subsequent developments, including the initiation of FCE under its current name in 1975, the introduction of CAE in 1991, as well as reviews, major revisions, and modifications, leading to the update of FCE and CAE for December 2008. On the way, the history attempts to balance theory and practice, fact and opinion, insider and outsider perspectives, recurring themes and key innovations. We see the scale of the FCE and CAE exams grow from an initial candidature of just 144, to make a significant contribution to Cambridge ESOL`s current total of over two million candidates in 130 countries. |

Ike Quebec – It Might as Well Be Spring [6/1] $27.53 Personnel: Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone); Freddie Roach (organ); Milt Hinton (bass); Al Harewood (drums).Producer: Alfred Lion.Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 9, 1961. Originally released on Blue Note (84105). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note`s Limited Edition Connoisseur series.Working with the same quartet that cut Heavy Soul — organist Freddie Roach, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Al Harewood — Ike Quebec recorded another winning hard bop album with It Might As Well Be Spring. In many ways, the record is a companion piece to Heavy Soul. Since the two albums were recorded so close together, it`s not surprising that there a number of stylistic similarities, but there are subtle differences to savor. The main distinction between the two dates is that It Might As Well Be Spring is a relaxed, romantic date comprised of standards. It provides Quebec with ample opportunity to showcase his rich, lyrical ballad style, and he shines throughout the album. Similarly, Roach has a tasteful, understated technique, whether he`s soloing or providing support for Quebec. The pair have a terrific, sympathetic interplay that makes It Might As Well Be Spring a joyous listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
